Recently, my child took the Iowa and CogAT assessment. Before, I noticed that she had a difficult time grasping certain mathematical concepts. Then the teacher confirmed what I was noticing. For many children, math can be confusing, intimidating, and frustrating.
So, I set out to search for the right workbook that could help my child grow confidence in math, more specifically math word problems. As I believe math word problems helps kids truly understand math and not just memorize.
Why math word problems matter?
It helps children learn how to:
- Think Critically
- Understand math in real-life situations
- Build confidence through problem-solving
My child is a 2nd grader, but I assign her things that’s above her current grade level. Between 2nd and 3rd grade is a crucial year for building math confidence, problem-solving skills, and more. I try to make it fun and exciting by using timers for fun challenges (their favorite here). Additionally, I would turn problems into games or work together. With consistent practice and the right support, this would help her grow confidence in math word problems.
It would help her think deeper and understand better. However, while searching for a math book that contained word problems, I realized that I would not actually find the “right” workbook that I needed for her learning. So, I took it upon myself to create one myself and one that I believe would benefit her in the long run.
